The habit of this upright shrub or small tree is narrow conical. 'Pyramidalis' grows to a height of 6 to 8 meters and a width of 5 meters. The twigs have a green to yellow-green bark. The shiny dark green leaves are elongated ovoid to ovate, tapering long at the base and apex, 5-7 centimeters long and 3-4.5 centimeters wide, partially smooth-edged but usually serrated in the middle part and finer thorny on the top part. The leaves are light green on the underside. This cultivar bears numerous red berries.
'Pyramidalis' is one of the most popular cultivars, suitable as a hedge plant because of its dense growth and good fruiting.

Holly grows in full sun, partial shade and shade, but requires a sufficiently moist, humus-rich soil. They do not like lime soil. Very wet soils are not suitable for holly.
Holly is very easy to cut and can be used as a solitary, in groups and as a hedge. Even the Romans already used holly to plant impenetrable hedges.
