A hybrid of Ilex aquifolium and Ilex cornuta. It is a fast-growing Ilex with red fruits and glossy green leaves that are slightly serrated. This cultivar responds very well to pruning and quickly forms a completely dense structure that offers privacy. Like most holly, this species prefers to grow in a humus-rich soil that is not too limy and too wet. 'Nellie R. Stevens' prefers to grow in full sun, but tolerates partial shade well. Unlike other holly, this cultivar also tolerates drought well.
