The most well-known birch, native to all of Europe. Forms an upright loose crown with later hanging branches. The fresh green leaf has a yellow to yellow-brown autumn colour. It is a tree that requires a lot of light to colour the trunk white. Older trunks become rough and dark in colour. Birches need light and do not tolerate a place in the shade. Grows on both dry and wet soils.
