Mainly used as a hedge plant, but also as a tree. The fresh green leaves appear early in the spring. The leaves are sharply serrated. The autumn colour is golden yellow. Plants that are pruned annually retain some of their withered leaves until deep into the winter. A mature tree grows to a width of 6-8 metres. Thrives on all soils, dry or wet. Tolerates light shade and severe pruning. Not to be confused with beech, Fagus sylvatica.

For planting a hedge, plant 4 hedge plants per metre, and 3 feathers per metre. 'Hedge plants' and 'feathers' can both be used for hedge planting. 'Hedge plants' are young seedlings that were planted close together in the nursery. They have not yet been pruned and are less branched, with lighter trunks than the 'Feathers'. 'Feathers' were dug up as 'hedge plants' and planted at a greater distance. They are grown on a bamboo stick, so they have straight stems and have been pruned several times. As a result, they are more branched and give a mature appearance more quickly.
