Small shrub or tree with a jagged crown. The young twigs are reddish brown. Round, smooth-edged green leaves, 4-9 cm long. Beautiful yellow autumn colour. Blooms with purple-pink flower bundles before the leaf development in late April-early May. Afterwards up to 10 cm long legumes that remain on the tree during the winter. Young specimens can suffer frost damage. Grows best on calcareous soils and tolerates drought well.
