Shrub with upright branches. Blooms before the leaf development with pleasantly scented, dark pink flowers in February-March. Narrow, elongated, grey-green leaves, 7-9 cm long, arranged in a whorl around the branches. Bears small, red (poisonous) berries in the autumn, but not so numerous. Requires a humus-rich, chalky soil and light shade. Can be in the sun but only in moist soil.
