Tall tree with a slender, columnar crown and upright branches, branching from the base of the trunk. Grows slowly, a mature specimen can reach a width of 3 metres. The oval leaves are glossy dark green, like those of the common beech. At a later age the tree gets small, inconspicuous flowers in May, followed by beechnuts. Does not grow on wet soils or soils with a variable groundwater level. Is best planted on a well-drained, humus-rich soil.
