Tall tree with a slender, columnar crown and upright branches, branching from the bottom of the trunk. Grows slowly, a mature specimen can reach a width of 3 metres. The oval leaves are shiny golden yellow in spring. During the summer they turn light green, changing to golden yellow in autumn. To get a nice yellow colour it should be planted in full sun. Later, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in May, followed by beechnuts. Does not grow on wet soils or soils with a fluctuating groundwater level. Is best planted on a well-drained, humus-rich soil.
