This holly does not resemble the common holly, more broad than tall growing, with small round dark green leathery leaves, similar to those of Buxus sempervirens. Produces black berries from autumn. Tolerates pruning and is therefore used as a hedge plant. Good frost resistance.

Holly grows in full sun, partial shade and shade, but requires sufficiently moist humus-rich soil. They do not like a chalky soil. Very wet soils are not suitable for holly.
Holly is very easy to cut and can be used as a solitary, in groups and as a hedge. Even the Romans used holly to plant impenetrable hedges.
