Medium-sized tree, green leaves 6-14 cm. In April white flowers up to 10 cm in diameter, just before the leaves open. The rounded ovate leaves turn yellow in autumn. As a mature tree very richly flowering. The crown of a mature tree can grow up to 8 metres wide.

Colloquially incorrectly called 'tulip tree'. The real tulip tree is the Liriodendron. Magnolias grow best in lime-poor, fresh, permeable humus-rich soil, in a sunny sheltered location.
